Dr. Mun-Yee Chik is an Australian board-certified* doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. After successfully running her acupuncture and Chinese Medicine clinic Acu Healthworks in Melbourne for more than 10 years, Mun-Yee now maintains MY True Health, a busy practice that not only integrates her extensive knowledge in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with Functional Medicine, but also includes a separate unit OncoThrive, with a special focus on Integrative Cancer Support.
Mun-Yee's previous career in clinical research and the Bio-pharmaceutical industry in the UK and in Asia has given her valuable insight into both the benefits and limitations of modern medicine and scientific research. She also understands that while it is important to adhere to the essence and principles of Chinese Medicine, the practice of healing cannot work in isolation without considering the complex western environment in which we live. As such, Mun-Yee is very mindful of the intricacies of balancing complementary and mainstream medicines, and appropriately utilising these for the benefit of her patients.
Mun-Yee has completed advanced studies that integrate Functional Medicine with Chinese Medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, USA. She incorporates Functional Medicine, nutrition, Chinese Medicine and acupuncture into her clinical practice to provide effective and realistic outcomes. She does this by scrutinising a patient’s health history, symptoms, lab & investigative reports, etc. to determine the root causes and contributory factors to arrive at a personalised diagnosis and treatment approach.
Mun-Yee holds a firm commitment to ongoing studies & research, and has completed advanced courses to safely provide oncology acupuncture for cancer patients experiencing treatment symptoms and side effects as well as evidence-based use of herbs & dietary supplements in cancer care, from the world renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s (MSKCC, New York) Integrative Medicine Training Program. She also holds a postgraduate Specialist Certificate in Cancer Sciences from The University of Melbourne. As a clinician who is interested in direct comparison of existing health care interventions to help her patients explore which are superior, and which pose the greatest benefits and harms, Mun-Yee holds a professional certificate in Comparative Effectiveness Research Training and Instruction (CERTaIN), from MD Anderson Cancer Center (the largest cancer centre in the USA), University of Texas.
Mun-Yee is a passionate advocate of the TCM tenets of holistic healthcare — that every person’s situation is unique, requiring a personalised, well-balanced approach that includes Chinese Medicine and other elements (e.g. diet & nutrition, exercise, emotional and mental health), while encouraging active participation in the healing process e.g. lifestyle or habit moderation. Her philosophy is to engage the individual in his or her own health journey, through open communication, compassion, proper diagnosis, non-judgment, to assist as much as possible in healing and prevention of diseases.
Mun-Yee works with people from myriad backgrounds and age groups – from children and elders; professional athletes and recreational sports persons to busy home-makers and corporate professionals. This includes working in tandem with general practitioners and/or other specialist healthcare professionals. She sees patients with a range of acute and chronic conditions including sports injuries, women’s health issues, digestive problems, stress, anxiety & sleep disorders and pain management (e.g. headache & migraine, back pain, repetitive stress injuries) as well as providing cancer treatment support (symptom management). For children or the needle-phobic, and where applicable, she provides the option of laser acupuncture and other Chinese Medicine alternatives e.g. herbal medicine, cupping and acupressure.
